I think I am addicted to sequencer apps on the iPad. The XENON Groove Synthesizer is very cool, it features a piano-matrix like editor for each of the 5 synths it comes with. It is very easy to use. This video is yet another demonstration of my first impression with the app.

I’ll give this app ★★★★☆ because of it’s ease of use. It would be nice if they had added more controls for synth parameters, but I won’t complain too much. I can see myself using this as a drum sequencer to bang out basic beat ideas that I’ll later import into Logic and expand on.

So, I have been having some fun with my new iPad. After seeing all the reviews on Synthtopia, I decided to purchase Korg’s iMS-20. It cost $15.99 in the App Store and it is worth every penny. I decided to take a video of my first impressions with this app, it is not the best of quality but it gives you an idea of what I was able to do with it without having previously used it.

For me, it is a bit intimidating because I don’t know how to use a modular synth; I only have experience playing with my Minimoog Voyager, DSI Mono Evolver synth, SCI prophet~600 … amongst a few others. I don’t know how to use patches. That being said, i’ve got some stuff to learn.

Upon first impressions, my favorite thing about this app it is a full blown drum synth and a sequencer. I was having a little trouble with precision editing but I’m sure after i get used to the feel of it, I’ll get better. (Or, if it’s not me, hopefully Korg will fix this.) I give this app ★★★★★!

i505 is a drum sequencer application that is modeled after Rolands MC-505. It is not one of the better quality apps in the app store but it is free and fun to play. It does not allow you to save your recording like some of the apps do.

I decided to post this video to demonstrate how easy it is to make a beat with the app. If the developer “BomCat” added the ability to export both the sound file and the midi file, I’m sure this app would become a favorite among many cause it is very intuitive and easy to use.

Since having my iPhone, one of my favorite apps has been the “Bebot” synth. I think the sound quality is amazing and it is super fun to use. After getting my iPad for Christmas, I was pleased to see that Normalware had updated the app to work with the iPad. Most of the music apps that I have purchased over the past few years on my iPhones are not recoded for the iPad to make use of the larger screen.

I decided to take a quick video of me playing with “Bebot” on my iPad to demonstrate how awesome I think it is. It is also capable of making so many more noises than what I did hear with it. (I was holding my iPhone recording the video with one hand, and playing the iPad with the other.)

Holy shit!!! I’ve been a little out of the loop lately and I did not know that Apple added touchOSC as a control surface in Logic. This means there is no configuration at all; just make sure your ports are right in Logic and on touchOSC. touchOSC now has labels which I think is amazing; there is no sense in having controls when you don’t know what they are for or what they control.

Another cool thing to note is there is a special page called “Software Instrument” on the “LogicPad” template. When you select your track with the software instrument on it and voila! Parameters are mapped out and labeled on the iPad. This is going to be amazing. I first tested this with the ES2 instrument … then i decided to test it with one of my third-party AUs. Holy Shit! Parameters were labeled and mapped.

Not that I don’t mind programming, but i’m glad i don’t have to cause … well … i just want to make some music, tweak some sounds … isn’t that what it’s all about?

I guess I was a “nice” girl this year because Santa left me a 64GB 3G iPad sitting underneath the tree. Now if only I had a little extra cash so I could buy some of the more expensive music apps in the app store.

I can’t wait to buy Korg’s iMS20. Another one that I really want to get is Korg’s iElectribe. These are just the first two off the top of my head.

Now all I need to get is a good audio cable and the iPad camera connector kit.
